First wave is returning with a vengeance out of the ever-growing British music scene, with many artists rightfully abandoning the traditional pedestrian pop algorithm for something altogether bolder and rougher. Do Nothing fall right into the mix with peers like Sports Team and FEET, yet they bring something altogether different with their latest single titled “LeBron James”. The song is built around an intricate Primus-style baseline that immediately draws your attention from the first chord. Deep, powerful guitar riffs and lively percussion meld in seamlessly and play nicely off vocals delivered in spoken verse. Suddenly, the chorus hits and “LeBron James” instantly gains a whole new level of energy: spoken verse gives way to a catchy, well-delivered chorus; the guitar – which never feels bogged down by the prominent base – picks up the tempo into a repetitive chord sequence that could have been pulled from an early Strokes album; and the drumming becomes even more entertaining. Oh, but how could I forget the brilliant lyricism throughout the single that expertly toes the fine line between humorous and serious. From the tongue-in-cheek “Well, the results are in / And it looks like everybody gets a big old slice of nothing / Everything was cool / I have no idea how it happened” to the sarcastic and heavily repeated “I got all dressed up for nothing”, you can’t help but laugh at the sometimes overly-facetious lyrics while simultaneously empathize with the deeper emotional sting (seemingly from being stood up by a friend or acquaintance) through the pinpoint vocal delivery.
