Sports Team

Who They Are

Sports Team, comprised of lead singer Alex Rice, guitarist Rob Knaggs, guitarist Henry Young, drummer Al Greenwood, bassist Oli Dewdney, and keyboardist Ben Mac, is a six-piece guitar band who met at Cambridge University and have been putting out their own unique brand of new wave revival since their formation in 2017.

Why You Should Listen

There’s something so retro, yet simultaneously so fresh, about Sports Team. As one of the first British indie bands in recent memory to return to first wave, the one-of-a-kind, groundbreaking genre that the Brits pioneered in the ‘80s, Sports Team combines power-pop with rock and just the right amount of punk sensibilities. You’ll immediately find that there is just something infectious about their music: high-energy with synths, crisp guitar, complex rhythms and percussion, and driving vocals. From the catchy, upbeat single “M5” to the hilariously tongue in cheek “Kutcher” to the rougher and harder “Here It Comes Again”, these guys are sure to not only keep you on your toes, but also whistling the song hours after you’ve finished listening. In terms of a relative style, think Elvis Costello meets the Clash meets Echo and the Bunnymen with the lyrical dry wit of Pavement. Oh, and just a final note: you’ve gotta see them live.

What You Should Listen To

Their entire discography consists of two EPs and three singles, and all of it is solid. Standouts include the Keep Walking! EP (must listens: back-to-back songs “M5” and “Get Along”) and the single “Here It Comes Again”. Additionally, Sports Team just released a new single titled “Fishing” in September 2019.
